"Shuffling amidst a diverse menu of musical styles (funk, ballad, pop, and a sprinkle of reggae), [Mullen's] songs provide rare insight and sensitivity into the journey of faith."
Whether
it soars in the lead or blends with others in the background, Nicole C.
Mullen’s
voice invites the listener into the throne room of the Almighty. Authenticity
and lyrical depth are her hallmarks and allow
her the opportunity to connect with her audience. Nicole C. Mullen, deep
within, is a consummate communicator and now, leads us in worship.
The original
worship label of the 70s, Maranatha Music, brings Nicole’s
worship to reality on her first worship recording, “Captivated.” Responsible
for creating a more iridescent worship experience is Ed Cash (Kari Jobe,
Matthew West
and Chris Tomlin) as the producer of this project.
Shuffling amidst a diverse menu of musical styles (funk, ballad, pop, and a sprinkle of reggae), her songs provide rare insight and sensitivity into the journey of faith. Her vocal hesitancy, for lack of a better term, in completing a word or phrase is what you expect from Nicole. It is her signature to a sweet, mellifluous voice.
In "I Need You (As the Deer)" Nicole gives the inspired words of Psalm 42 a fresh spin complete with organ frills. The lyrics are rich in biblical truth and feet moving melody. I could see this being used in worship services soon.
The beautiful ballad "Forgive Me" with its orchestral introduction transitioning to piano and guitar, finds Mullen in a passionate plea and lyrical confession before the King of Kings.
She blends “Redeemer,” one of her hits from the 90s, with the legendary Andre Couch’s “My Tribute" (80s) in a union that just makes sense.
A fan favorite will be "I'll Praise Your Holy Name" as it was the first song composed by Mullen when she only 12 years old. It is a joy-filled worship anthem, guitar-only, that goes well beyond her youthfulness.
Prime Cuts: “Forgive Me,” “I Need You (As the Deer),” “A Song for You” and “Holy-Captivated.” Three extended versions of “Holy-Captivated,” “I Can,” and “I Need You” are included.
Aptly titled, “Captivated” is
solidly grounded in scriptural truth and performed with a transparency
that Nicole brings to her outpouring
of praise. An intimate worship experience has been captured through the
melodies and the variety of musical styles in this collection.
