In 2004, rockers Falling Up found immediate success with their first debut album release of Crashings. Fans clamored about how they out “Linkin Parked” mainstream artist Linkin Park in similar musical styling and won the fans hearts. Since then the band, with two more releases under them (Dawn Escapes and the remix of their own tunes as well as Exit Lights, both with equal success) are back with Captiva.
Since their origin, Falling Up has changed their line up more than they have their socks, but this latest release hasn’t faltered for it. At times it can be confusing with new and old band members coming and going, but Falling Up holds strong with the three remaining band members. 2007 brought quite a few new artists to the Christian scene and even amongst those releases Captiva stands out as a respective leader in their genre.
Beware, you may be disappointed in Captiva’s new sound. Fans looking for another staple in Falling Up’s breakout history might not find it here. As always though, these guys still know how to rock out. Such is so on tracks like, “Goodnight Gravity”, the already acclaimed “Hotel Aquarium”, and “Murexa”. The rest of the album definitely has a slower, more dreamer feel. Even a few tracks seem as though they belong in a movie soundtrack and quite possible could. The new sound is mature but moving, with each part fitting together equally, but not overdone.
Captiva takes some getting used to, but it begins to grow on you as lead singer Jessy Ribordy’s voice carries the album’s momentum very well. His lyrics cry out the love our Savior has for us and is unafraid to declare His name. That is something always good to hear.
Yes, Falling Up’s sound is a step in a different direction for the band, yet maybe it’s a longer stride then the band expected. I am excited to see where Captiva takes them in their sound and style on the band’s next release.
