Give Yourself Away - Robbie Seay Band
Reviewed by Adrian B. Martinez
I love it when you discover a song that totally takes over and you just keep hitting the “repeat” button on your CD player to guarantee you memorize the lyrics and all the nuances of the song. As of late, “Song of Hope”, an upbeat invitation to engage with the living God by Robbie Seay Band has been getting “repeat” business in my home.

Let’s get to the guys and their new work. When the Robbie Seay Band debuted back in 2005 with the critically acclaimed “Better Days”, it’s a pretty safe bet they never dreamed that fans as influential as David Crowder and author Donald Miller (Blue Like Jazz) would openly express their anticipation for their sophomore release. On August 28, 2007 that wait was over.

On Give Yourself Away (from Sparrow Records) this Houston alternative worship band pushes their musical craft with a new energy and relevance that shows influences of other modern worshippers.

Beginning with its call to action by way of premiere song “Rise”, to its finale “Go Outside”; “…this project contains a lot of the stories of our lives from the past two years,” says Robbie. Realizing that people respond immediately to stories, Robbie wanted to write this album in that direction.

Having written all but one of the twelve tracks, (the one being “Beautiful Scandalous Night”) Give Yourself Away also marks the first time the group has turned over the production reins to sole producer and guiding hand, Tedd T. (MuteMath, Delirious?) “Crafting this project with Tedd has been a natural growth process for the band; he stretched us and challenged us,” explains Robbie. “It has been the best experience I’ve had in music.”

Robbie goes on further to say, “it’s a missional record, almost a rebirth of how we’re seeing our faith and how we’re seeing a lot of young Christians respond to the great need around the world and at home.” As the worship band for Ecclesia Church in Houston, Robbie Seay Band has built a name for being one of the smartest and most uncompromising new bands in Christian music. In addition to Robbie, who serves as the group’s voice and principal songwriter, the band consists of longtime friends Dan Hamilton and Ryan Owens.

So until they hit your town this fall while on tour with Brandon Heath, “Rise, Rise-people of love, Rise/Give Yourself Away…” and remember to turn up the volume and hit REPEAT.
