Some bands start out strong, and fizzle out quickly. Some bands remain virtually unknown for years before having a break out hit. And then there’s All Star United, a band that started strong (think “Bright Red Carpet” and “Tenderness”) with their self-titled album, and continued through Smash Hits and Revolution, to get here: Love and Radiation.
“Love and Radiation”, the title song, starts off with a rousing beat that declares “you’re the one I’ve been waiting for” in an upbeat love song that addresses our awe and fear of a mighty God. “You’re the true love, I’ve always been afraid of” sums up how many of us feel, quite well.
All Star United’s unique sound hasn’t varied by much through their albums, but it has grown a bit. With less emphasis on guitar, and an always developing skill set, ASU has produced an album that will appeal to anyone who appreciates a high level of quality in their music. But that doesn’t mean this is all vanilla, oh no.
In “Song of the Year” ASU sets the record straight on why they’re in the music business. The clever lyrics will make you laugh, while pointing out that the reason for their music is to honor God, not themselves. “I don’t need you to adore me, cuz it’s all about God’s glory” makes their stance clear. Still, how can you not love a song that includes the line “something something something something, that rhymes with Jesus’ name”?
”Let’s Rock Tonight” will make you want to jump up and dance along to the pop-rock beat, while “Jesus on the Radio” has a more mellow groove. “We Could Be Brilliant” has an almost worshipful sound, and “Like Hallelujah” is one of those incredible, romantic songs that you’re not entirely sure if it’s written for another person, or if it’s directed to God.
There is no question where this band’s allegiance lies, but the songs never get heavy-handed or preachy. Instead, there’s gentle reflection, brilliant lyrics, and an over-all feeling of not taking one’s self too seriously. Still, emphasis is made on taking responsibility for your own actions.
Combining grunge, pop, rock, and alternative styles, Love and Radiation is almost universally radio friendly, and still retains a quality and uniqueness that will keep fans from all over the music spectrum coming back for more.
