Tween, Teen Pop, Boy Bands, Pop Princess’, all words used to describe bubblegum pop, that style/form of music that erupts over the radio every couple of months/years. Of late we have had Miley Cyrus or Hannah Montana (technically the same person but for those in the “know” not the same at ALL), Hillary Duff, The Cheetah Girls, Raven-Symone, The Jonas Brothers, and now The Rubyz.
The latest in a long line of Christian Tween Pop Stars, the three young ladies that comprise the Rubyz now join the ranks that include PureNRG, Jump5, PlusOne, and SonShine. This trio of friends, Cammie (16), Alexis (14) and Marissa (13) took their name from Proverbs 31:10, a passage that elaborates on the characteristics of a noble woman “…She is worth far more than rubies.”
The intent of this debut was to make a fun album. Mission accomplished. We have a little bit of everything on this short 10-track album which clocks in at a little over 34-minutes. The Rubyz tackle two covers from two very different decades; “We Got the Beat”, a hit for the Go-Go’s in 1982 and “Umbrella” by Rhianna a hit from 2007. We also get a little bit of the Latin touch in the danceable track “Baila Chiquita” and a little hint of former tween sensation JoJo (“Leave or Get Out”) in “Just like You”, a song that appreciates a friend who isn’t afraid to be themselves around others.
For those with Tweens obsessed with Hannah Montana or anxiously awaiting the next installment of the High School Musical franchise, you can’t go wrong with the Rubyz. These young women are intent on sharing their faith, and with this fun pop album, laced with catchy hooks, and some amazing vocals, they are sure to please.
Memo to moms and dads: While we are in the midst of re-union tours for such past Bubblegum stars as the Spice Girls or the New Kids on the Block, there's hope for family-friendly music that you could all listen to together. Teen Pop has a short life span that is over almost as soon as it starts or once the next “big thing comes along”. Now is the time for The Rubyz to shine.
