Timeless : The Selah Collection
Reviewed by Adrian B. Martinez
“We had no idea God used that night in Indiana to a start a little trio called Selah”, is what founding member Todd Smith had to say about that pivotal night 10-years ago when he, Nicol Sponberg and Allan Hall came together in music and ministry. It is a decade later and while some of the faces have changed, Selah is still doing what it does best …revealing the heart of the song.

Timeless: The Selah Collection celebrates that date in 1997 when the trio of Sponberg, Hall and Smith were born. For the five-time GMA Music Award-winning group, revealing the heart of the song, second only to God’s grace has always been the “thing”. With this 4-disc anthology, we are given the opportunity to re-visit this popular inspirational trio’s success of six recordings and sales of more than 1 million.

Essentially a repackaging of the group’s three primary releases with Nicol Sponberg (1999’s Be Still My Soul, 2001’s Press On and 2004’s Hiding Place); Timeless also includes a 4th disc of bonus material. Featuring the collaboration with longtime friend Melodie Crittendon, most notably singing the title track from the 2006 release Bless the Broken Road, The Duets Album and newest member Amy Perry who is featured on 3 new tracks, and a re-working of the Keith Green classic “There is a Redeemer”. This bonus CD also includes a live version of their concert stand-out “Were You There” and a previously unreleased recording from the Hiding Place sessions of Andrae Crouch’s “I Didn’t Think It Could Be”. They are all collected in a beautiful book-styled package with an extensive 50 page folio that includes photos, group history, lyrics and song-by-song comments.

With earthy gospel-pop arrangements resembling Alison Krauss, Andrae Crouch, and Ashley Cleveland, this collection reminds us of Selah’s ability to deliver a great song with their impressive vocalization. It is their authenticity of the music, their continued ability to honestly deliver a great song that meets people where they live, in simple, yet profound and powerful ways, that allows Selah’s ministry to continue impacting people all over the world. Timeless: The Selah Collection is a must have for longtime fans and a great way to introduce this “stripped down” modern day 2nd Chapter of Acts or First Call to new listeners.
